Steps to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarly publishing
July 24, 2024
We recently announced Professor Leher Singh, the incoming Chair and Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County as the newly appointed Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Associate Editor for Developmental Science. The DE&I Associate Editor is a new position, created to help address inequities which have been well documented and researched within developmental psychology. Wiley’s own Joseph Krumpfer Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Polymer Science and Business Lead, Research & Publishing DEI Council recently interviewed Leher to find out more about the position, and her hopes and goals for the role.
In this interview, Leher introduces how behavioural science and psychology fields have begun to confront many of the big questions of who is represented in journals, and how we see gaps between representation both around the world and in journals. Equity and inclusion are closely tied to diversity, and we need to engage in structural reform to make the publishing landscape more accessible for all of those who can contribute to it.
The DE&I Associate Editor will focus on advancing DE&I practices in developmental psychology and supporting researchers from underrepresented groups and regions to publish in Developmental Science. This will involve commissioning research for special issues and contributing to a review of the journal’s editorial board. The DE&I Associate Editor will advise on new policies and the endorsements of DE&I guidelines.
Leher considers open science and data sharing, major opportunities in the DE&I space which, when implemented correctly, have great potential for enhancing equity in journal publishing.
Looking to the future, Leher hopes to normalise DE&I practices as a mainstream priority in all journals, working collaboratively with others in the field of behavioural science and psychology to embed these at the core of journal development, for there to be generalisable and representative science.
